Coronavirus Advice for Hot Tubs and Swimming Pools
With regularly changing guidelines and restrictions regarding COVID-19, information concerning what is and isn’t safe to do is causing confusion for many.
To put your mind at ease about the use of your swimming pool or hot tub at this time, we share some of the information we know about how and why it is still safe to use your swimming pool or hot tub during the COVID-19 outbreak.
The CDC is one of the key institutions providing information about the safety of certain activities during COVID-19 from a scientific perspective.
The CDC has stated the following:
“There is no evidence that COVID-19 can be spread to humans through the use of pools and hot tubs. Proper operation, maintenance, and disinfection (e.g. with chlorine and bromine) of pools and hot tubs should remove or inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19.”
This means that as long as you are maintaining your pool or hot tub properly, it should be safe for you to use. To properly maintain them, you will need to use the right pool cleaner and hot tub water treatments, including chlorine and bromine. These chemicals should kill or inactivate the virus, so it is safe to continue using your pool.
You should still take into consideration usual hygiene standards and ensure that you are cleaning your body before and after using the swimming pool or hot tub, to ensure the water remains as sanitary as possible.
So relax and unwind in your swimming pool or hot tub and keep yourself away from crowded and public places where possible. Escape and retreat to the soothing waters!
It is important to note that swimming can put extra strain on the lungs, and the hot, humid conditions of a hot tub can make breathing more difficult. This means you should avoid using a hot tub or swimming pool if experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, even at home, as this may exacerbate your symptoms.
If you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, then you must self-isolate for at least ten days from when your symptoms started. If you still have symptoms after 10 days, you should remain isolated until the symptoms have gone.
Public hot tubs and pools have to take more precautions than an at-home spa. Strict cleaning regimes must be in place, including disinfecting surfaces and pipework, as well as conducting regular microbiological tests on the water.
While chlorine can kill the coronavirus, those who are ill or showing symptoms should not be allowed to enter the water. Even though the virus may not survive in chlorinated water, there is still the risk of contaminating pool ladders or other equipment and surfaces.

If you are a frequent swimmer in public pools and are concerned with the idea of swimming in the same space as other members of the public, then you could consider installing your own pool at home, if you have an appropriate space available. For smaller spaces, you could relax and unwind in a hot tub while still enjoying the experience of being in the water.
