Pool Pumps and Filters

The swimming pool pump circulates the pool water through the pools filter which mixes the chemicals and sanitises the water to keep it free from contaminants and debris. It is important to choose the right swimming pool filter and pump combination for your pool so the system operates efficiently.

The first step to choosing the correct pump is to find out the volume of water your pool has as the pump will need to turn over this volume within 6 hours if the pool is indoors or 8 hours if the pool is outdoors. You can calculate the flow rate required from the pump by dividing the pool volume in cubic meters with the time in hours so a pool with a volume of 50 cubic meters would need -

Indoor Pools

50 m3 / 6 (Hours) = 8.34 - Which means you need a pump with a flow rate of 8.34 m per hour

Outdoors Pools

<50 m3 / 8 (Hours) = 6.25 - Which means you need a pump with a flow rate of 6.25 m per hour

However you also need to consider the number of shell fittings as this can affect the maximum flow rate, as a general rule each inlet, skimmer, or drain has a capacity of 5 m per hour. So for the above examples, you would need at least 2 inlets and 2 outlets which would give you the ability to fit a pump of up to 10 m per hour.

The last consideration when choosing the right size of the pump is to be aware of the distance from the pump to the pool, and elevation. Any distance over 10 meters or if the pump is higher than the top of the pool, you should consider getting a slightly more powerful pump to combat possible velocity loss.

Once have chosen your pump, choosing the right size of the filter will be a much easier process. Simply ensure that the maximum flow rate of the filter is equal or greater than the flow rate of the pump. You can choose between a top-mounted or side-mounted filter. A top-mounted filter is more suitable if your pool suffers from airlocks as they are easier to bleed and a side-mounted filter has a lower profile and has an inspection hatch to see inside the filter which makes the media change easier.

There are a number of pool pumps on the market to suit all budgets and the price of the pump reflects its build quality and performance. The hydro swim HGS pumps and the Sta-rite 5P2R pumps can give many years of reliable service if you keep your water balanced correctly especially the pH as levels below 7.2 and above 7.6 can cause damage to the pump's internals.
