When Should I Open My Pool?
With warmer weather on the horizon, it is time to start considering preparing to open your pool back up again to enjoy in spring and summer.
It would be best if you began opening your pool around 2-3 weeks before you plan on taking your first dip of the year. Although we can get days warm enough to swim in late May and June in the UK, if you wait until then to open your pool, you risk pulling back your winter pool cover and revealing extensive algae growth and green water.
As the temperature begins to warm up, algae can start to grow in your pool water, and if you use a mesh pool cover, the algae growth will be accelerated as the water is exposed to sunlight. Furthermore, springtime is also pollen season, and pollen can collect in your pool, resulting in unswimmable water.
If you're a new pool owner, our beginner's guide to swimming pool maintenance may prove a particularly useful resource, covering how to tackle algae growth and much more.
You should open your pool when the outside daytime temperature stays consistently around 15 degrees Celsius. Although 15 degrees is still a little too cold to go swimming, it's not too cold for algae to grow and cause unpleasant and unsanitary green water.
We recommend opening your pool as soon as you can. In the UK, historically, the beginning of May has seen daytime temperatures reach approximately 15 degrees Celsius; therefore, the first weeks of May can be a good time to plan on opening your pool. However, temperatures will vary from the north and south of England, so we recommend taking your location into consideration.
One of the best ways to ensure the temperature will remain consistent is to look at the previous year's temperatures in your area of the UK. It will become consistently warmer in the south of England before the north of the UK, which can be seen on the Weather Spark UK temperature charts.
Therefore, pools in the south of the UK can often be opened for the season a couple of weeks before pools in the far north of England or Scotland.
Opening your pool after winter can take some time; not only will you need to complete a number of checks and maintenance tasks, but you will also need to allow time for your pool pump and filter to run. Therefore, beginning this process should be done as soon as appropriate.
There are several steps that should be followed to ensure your pool is ready and safe for the first swim of the season. The tasks are as follows:
