Electric Pool Heaters Vs Heat Pumps 

While both use electricity in some way, these heating methods are quite different. Direct electric heaters use electricity to heat the heating elements, water is then pumped over the heating element, causing it to warm up, raising the overall temperature of the pool. Heat pumps use a very small amount of electricity to power the process of capturing heat from the ambient air temperature and transferring it to the water. 

While electric heaters obviously use more electrical energy and offer less long-term efficiency than pool heat pumps, their initial cost is often much cheaper. As they don’t have to rely on air temperatures, electric heaters can also be more reliable. Their silent operation also makes them a good option for those who live in built-up residential areas.
