So-called ‘on/off’ heat pumps either work at 100% capacity (on) or 0% (off). This is opposed to inverter heat pumps, which can vary how much heat output they provide to match the pool’s heating requirements.
This can make inverter heat pumps even more efficient than on/off heat pumps (which are already far more efficient than other electric or gas pool heaters). However, inverter heat pump units themselves can be much more expensive than standard heat pumps, which may put some people off.
