FAQs

When Should I use a Pool the Pool Opening & Closing Kit?

You should use the kit in early spring to open your pool and prepare it for swimming. At the end of the season, use the products for winterising. Doing so will make maintenance a lot easier the following year.

Why is it important to close a swimming pool for the winter?

Closing your pool for the winter offers several benefits:

  • Water Maintenance: When a pool is not in regular use, it becomes more susceptible to the growth of algae and bacteria. Winterising your pool allows you to adjust the water chemistry and take preventive measures to keep the water clean and safe. When you come to open next season it will be a lot easier to maintain than a pool thats left to go green, using the Pool Opening & Chemical Kit saves both time and money.

  • Energy Efficiency: Since you're not using your pool, closing it helps conserve energy by reducing the need to run the pool pump and heater. A pool cover also helps retain heat, minimising energy waste. To find out how to winterise your heat pump read our help blog click here

  • Safety: When your pool is not in use, a secure Safety Pool Cover adds a layer of protection, especially for pets and children, by preventing accidental falls into the pool.

How do I use Granular Shock?

The non-stabilized Granular Shock in the Pool Opening & Closing Chemical Kit is perfect for both shock dosing and routine disinfection of your pool water. It’s designed to eliminate bacteria, algae, and maintain water clarity, making it essential for regular pool upkeep or winterising your pool.

Here are key steps for using Granular Shock:

  • Keep your pool's pH levels between 7.2 and 7.6.
  • Regularly maintain free chlorine levels between 1-3 mg/L (ppm). For shock treatment, use up to 10 mg/L (ppm), recommended weekly or bi-weekly.
  • Dissolve the shock by mixing 100g of the product with 2.2 gallons (10 liters) of water in a clean plastic container. Stir well until fully dissolved.
  • Pour the solution into the pool while the pump is running, preferably near the pool’s inlets for even distribution.
  • Use Granular Shock in a well-ventilated area (preferably outdoors) and wash your hands after handling.
  • Store the product in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture absorption.

By following these guidelines, you’ll keep your pool safe, clear, and algae-free year-round.

What is the Long Life Algaecide, and how does it work?

The Long Life Algaecide prevents algae growth in your pool. It provides long-lasting protection by forming a barrier against algae, especially when the pool is not in use during the off-season.

Do I need to run my pool pump while adding these chemicals?

Yes, it’s recommended to run your pool pump during and after adding the chemicals. This ensures the chemicals are evenly distributed throughout the pool water.

How soon after applying the chemicals can I swim in the pool?

After applying the Granular Shock, wait for chlorine levels to return to safe levels (typically 24-48 hours). Test the water before swimming to ensure it is safe for use.

Can I use the kit in saltwater pools?

Yes, the Pool Opening & Closing Kit is suitable for both saltwater and chlorinated pools.
