Pool liner buying advice
Pool liners will deteriorate over time due to normal use, pool chemicals and even sun exposure this length of time depends on how strong your liner is. Some pool liners may only 8-10 years while the thicker commercial rate ones may last up to 25 years under normal use. This guide will give you advice on which type of liner is suitable for your pool.
It is important you get your pool measurements correct as the shape and size of your pool will determine the type of liner you will need. Most swimming pool liners are measured in feet and pool builders will normally build your pool to a standard size i.e 24ft x 12ft etc but if you need to have an irregular shaped pool then it may be best to have the pool measurements taking by a swimming pool engineer or the person who is going to install your liner. If your pool is rectangular and has a flat-bottom then you will just need to obtain the length and width dimensions.
Choosing The Liner
Pool liners are available in different thicknesses the thicker the liner the more durable and long-lasting the liner will be. The thickness of the pool liner is measured normally in gauge and is very similar to millimeters so a 30 gauge liner is actually a 26mm thick liner. Standard pool liners are 20 gauge and will last between 8 10 years compared to the thicker 30 gauge liners which will last between 15 maybe 20 years. Commercial rated liners are normally 40 gauge as they will withstand heavy use. The 20 gauge liners will be less expensive as the thicker liners and will be much easier to install as they are more flexible due to the thinner vinyl material. There are normally various different styles and colours to choose from and you also have a patterned tile band.
Liner Colours
Liners come in various shades of blue but you can also get lighter and darker colours which have their own advantages and disadvantages. Lighter coloured liners will make the water more visible to swimmers and will reflect light to keep the water cooler whereas darker coloured liners will absorb heat better and also has the benefit of hiding imperfections better.
Pool Liner Care
Always ensure your pool is never drained so the pool liner does not peel away from the pool walls. Use a pool cover during the winter to help prevent damage from falling debris i.e. staining from leaves and in the summer sun exposure can make your pool liner fade. It's also important to ensure your water is correctly balanced i.e. chlorine and pH levels are kept within acceptable ranges.
